SSHS’s Inaugural Journey to Japan In the July holidays of this year, fourteen students from Years 8~12, two parents, Ms Lin and Mr Percy experienced the wonderful sights and sounds of Tokyo and its surrounds for 8 days. It is the first time that SSHS has ever facilitated an excursion to an overseas destination and if the smiles on the students faces are anything to go by, it was a fantastic success. They experienced both the modern and traditional sides of a city, which is home to over 20 million people. Some of the highlights of the journey included a ride on the ‘Shinkansen’ – the Bullet train, which reached 270km/h; travelling to the top of an ancient castle in Odawara; a guided tour of the Imperial Palace where the Emperor resides; watching ‘cosplay’ in Harajuku; and communicating with so many lovely Japanese people. The tour was able to occur thanks to the outstanding efforts of the organiser, Ms Lin. Special thanks must also go to Mr Valenti, Ms Diane Dunn and Mr Percy for supporting this truly remarkable educational experience. An extra thankyou must also go to the 2 parents, Mrs Ulger and Mrs Vasilakis, and the students for representing the school and community with such enthusiasm, respect and pride. |
